Voice Care for Teachers by Pocholo "The Voice Master Gonzales: A Book Review

So before I do my review, let me first give you a background about my first encounter with Mr. Pocholo Gonzales. It was August this year in a blogger’s forum when I was first moved by Mr. Pocholo. I must say that I got impressed immediately with his profile when he was being introduced and I got even more enthralled when I heard him speak.
Dubbed as “The Voice Master” in the Philippines, Mr. Pocholo Gonzales is a voice practitioner, radio broadcaster, business man, teacher, youth advocate, and a motivational speaker.
There are a lot of speakers out there that claims to motivate and inspire people but I believe that only few does. In that line, I believed that Mr. Pocholo is one of the few who has the knack to influence people in a positive way.
Perhaps, the entertaining way he speaks contributes to his credibility and sincerity. He is the kind of speaker that knows how to connect to his audience.
To make the long story short, I instantly got interested to read his book since I somewhat aspire to be like him,an effective speaker with the passion to motivate and influence.
What is ‘Voice Care for Teachers’ about?

With nine chapters and about a hundred pages, I must say that the book is a brief manual about the significance of the human voice and how to take care of it. Few interesting topics included in the book were power of your voice, vocal workout and health, and storytelling.

What I like about the book?

They say that communications is power since it can influence people. Thus, a having an understanding of its elements and how to maximize each one should be put into consideration.

So here are the things that I like about the book.

An Assessment for our Voice

A chapter is solely dedicated to assess the quality and health of your voice. I believe this is a great way to see how far you should go with improving the quality of your voice.

In my case, I was surprised to get a very poor scores to some of the exercises. At first, I thought that I will have positive results with the assessment since my work does not require me to use my voice so much, but then I realized that a handful of things could affect the health of your voice.

Factual at the same time Easy-to-understand

To have a better understanding of things requires to delve into the basic components.

Seriously this book is packed with a lot of helpful information. Some are scientific, such as, what and how our organs worked towards producing our voice.

Yet, I am happy that the concepts were explained in a simple manner that can be understood right away.

Say for instance, the topic found at page 40 explains the three main organs that results phonation. These include the larynx, pharynx and the trachea. The terminologies is very scientific yet the concepts were explained in a simple way.

Realizations

I believe that a book that does not affect you in anyway is ineffective.I am not a bookworm, but there are few books that gave lasting effects to me.

I believe this book does not only serve its purpose of providing vital data or facts about our voice. It also reminds us that we should learn how to gave importance to our gift of voice.

Also, it made me realize that lifestyle is a big factor on being an effective communicator. Thanks to this book and I got more conscious about my posture.

What I wish the book would include?

Doing the given drills in the book is fun and somehow relaxing especially those stretching exercises. I also like the fact that the book provided photos on how to do the workout correctly. However,I am in doubt for some of the activities whether I am doing it correctly or not.

Like for the drills that includes producing different sounds.Possibly, an instructional audio material would be very helpful.

Who should read the book?

The title really  says that the book is dedicated for teachers. In fact, at least two chapters were tips on how to further improve teaching techniques. Yet, I truly believe that everyone should read this book since the health of our voice should not be taken for granted.

To cap things up, I must say that the author concisely provided important notes about vocal care by delving into the basic concepts.

Definitely, I will recommend this book to my specialists at American Institute for English Proficiency and to my friends.
